The NYPD has since brought charges against 7 officers for breaking internal rules in the killing of Sean Bell. These charges include improperly discharging firearms and failure to process the crime scene. Consequences for these charges, if upheld, could range from loss of pay to mandatory retraining to firing. Civil rights charges in Bell’s killing may also be brought up by federal prosecutors.

Thursday’s crowd spanned a considerable range in ages and ethnicities. Starting from Rufus King Park on Jamaica Avenue, the group chanted and marched around downtown Jamaica. An impromptu rally was held outside Club Kalua, where Bell spent his final hours. Also visited was the site of Bell’s shooting on Liverpool Street, where an improvised memorial of signs, flowers, flags, and masking tape has been devised.

The group remained peaceful for its duration. However, an oppressive police presence, with officers literally nearly out-numbering protesters, was present for much of the march.

Thursday’s march was called for by the Harlem Revolution Club, which has organized marches in Jamaica, Queens, each week since the dismissive verdict. The next call for action is on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Union Square. Protesters objecting to the acquittals in Bell’s killing are requested to amass for a 4 pm rally and 6 pm march to City Hall.
